Antique hatbox headdress hat Grisette de Niort

We are particularly proud of this find as it is a very rare and special object: we are talking about an ancient French wooden hatbox that was used to store and transport the typical headdress used for traditional ceremonies by the women of Niort. Niort for those who do not know is a town in France in Aquitaine, this lace headdress is called Grisette, it is made as a bonnet - flat on the head, worn on the nape of the neck, it left small lace flaps hanging down on the sides as you can see from the photos. Inside the hat there was a wooden support that served precisely to keep the bonnet in shape. Late 19th century.
